You may have seen local artist, Kat Simmers, out painting by Atlantic Auto Sales or Colonel Walker School by now. As part of Calgary Arts Development’s Utility Box Public Art Program Kat has taken on these 2 utility boxes as an opportunity to add a little more art to Inglewood. With a survey answered by Inglewoodians informing her content, Kat has shared the attached drafts for these projects which we couldn't be more excited about!
Both designs incorporate survey feedback of things in Inglewood people love and enjoy about the area. Wildlife and recreation were both common themes and are reflected in the designs. Design 1 brings in the various festivals, animals, locations, and activities suggested by people. Design 2, closest to Colonel Walker School and Piitoayis Family School, also includes more imagery reflective of the Indigenous history of our community that many wanted to see more of.
The ICA is looking forward to see these designs come to life as she paints over the next few weeks. Our gratitude to Calgary Arts Development, the City of Calgary, and Kat Simmers for this pop of local colour.
Design 1 will be painted at 9th Avenue SE and 15th Street SE, at the YWCA intersection across from the brewery on the corner closest to Atlantic Auto Sales.
Design 2 will be painted at 9th Avenue SE and 19th Street SE, across from the Blackfoot Truck stop and at the corner of the Colonel Walker School lot in the old Blackfoot right-of-way.
